Recovery Tips Following Your Eyelid Surgery

You’re considering eyelid surgery but have some questions you want answered – a few are on how to prepare for the operation and others about the surgery itself. But what is most critical to understand is what happens when the surgery is over and you’re at home recovering.

What you do during the healing process is as important as the surgery itself. To prepare for your recovery at home, here are some tips Dr. Cooper has put together to ensure you get the most out of your eyelid lift.

Get Plenty of Rest

Sufficient rest and sleep during your recovery are critical to a successful recovery. It’s at this time when your body heals at the greatest rate. Make sure you have your home prepared so you can relax not only in your bed but in a special area where you can keep your movements to a minimum. This may be a recliner or chaise lounge.

When you do sleep and relax, always keep your head elevated above your chest to keep swelling to a minimum. For at least the first several days, we recommend two to three pillows under your head and shoulders, or use a foam wedge.

Avoid Strenuous Activities

A week after your operation is when you may feel restless, but you need to continue resting. This includes avoiding activities that are strenuous or place unnecessary pressure on facial tissues. It’s also crucial not to strain your eyes, particularly when your skin feels tight. Remain inside as much as possible. The first week is critical to give your eyes a chance to heal.

Wear Sunglasses Outdoors

Although Dr. Cooper recommends you stay indoors for most of the early stages of your recovery, it is critical that you wear sunglasses if you must go outside. The skin of the eyelids is delicate and sensitive to sunlight. You should also apply sunscreen to the area after the incisions are healed.

Keep Screen Time to a Minimum

We know you’ll be indoors in the early stage of your recovery, but that doesn’t mean you should spend hours in front of your television. Keep your screen time to a minimum, so your eyes aren’t strained. Too much time in front of the TV or computer could lead to dryness and a longer recovery.

Eat Right

Nutrition plays a significant role in the healing process. Eat plenty of eggs, meat, nuts, vegetables, and beans. These foods will not only help your body to heal quickly, but they may also help you sleep, too.

Also, drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is a simple way to support your recovery. Ensure your kitchen is adequately stocked to have what you need before you get home from our accredited surgery center.
