Eyelid Surgery Palm Beach with Dr. Jason Cooper

Nothing promotes a youthful appearance like bright, alert eyes. The eyes are what people focus on when they talk to you or when you first meet. They are truly the windows to your inner self, and when they look great, you are also assessed in a positive light. But when the effects of age creep in with wrinkles, undereye circles, or sagging upper eyelids, you may look tired and worn. Eye rejuvenation through blepharoplasty, better known as eyelid surgery, can work wonders for your facial appearance and positively impact how others see you.

To learn more about the best eyelid surgery in Florida, request a consultation with Dr. Jason Cooper at one of his convenient locations in Jupiter or West Palm Beach. We proudly serve patients from Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Boca Raton, and all over Florida.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, helps women and men in South Florida improve their facial appearances by making them look well-rested and alert. This facial rejuvenation around the eyes restores youthful skin textures while eliminating age-related drooping lids and circles under the eyes. Benefits also include:

  • An energetic appearance
  • Lift drooping eyelids
  • Reduce puffiness under the eyes
  • Reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles

Dr. Cooper performs each blepharoplasty procedure on the upper or lower eyelids, concurrently or each as a standalone procedure. These options depend on each patient’s cosmetic concerns and goals. Results are realized within a few weeks after surgery and are long-term. Patients often tell us they see their results continue to improve for months, even up to a year, after their plastic surgery.

We encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Cooper to discuss your specific goals. He may recommend upper eyelid surgery, lower, or both. He may also recommend combining your eyelid surgery with other procedures like a facelift or non-surgical corrections like BotoxDermal Fillers, laser skin resurfacing, IPL, etc. to achieve the best results possible.

Lower Lid Blepharoplasty

Upper Lid Blepharoplasty

The best candidates for eyelid surgery include patients who struggle with undereye circles, wrinkles on the eyelids, or a tired and worn-out appearance. Ideal candidates have a realistic expectation of what blepharoplasty can and cannot do for them, are in good health, don’t smoke, and have no underlying major eye conditions.

Dr. Cooper employs a customized approach to eyelid surgery, treating his patients according to their cosmetic issues and personal goals. He uses this method on all his cosmetic treatments, both surgical and non-surgical.

The Eyelid Lift Procedure

Dr. Cooper performs blepharoplasty under IV sedation. After sedation, he creates small incisions in the natural lines above the upper lid or the lower lid at the lash line. Next, Dr. Cooper meticulously works by removing excess skin and fat, along with some muscle. Then, he reshapes the eye contour to a natural, youthful appeal. Lastly, he closes with fine sutures to reduce any risk of scarring.

Eyelid Lift Recovery

Patients may have some bruising and inflammation in the eye area. They may also experience dry eye, itching, and some minor discomfort. Cold compresses, lubricating ointments, and pain medication can help relieve these side-effects. In some cases, the patient must wear gauze over the eyes after the operation, but this does not last long.

Although each patient is unique in how they heal, most take 3-5 days off from work after their procedure. We recommend refraining from vigorous exercise for three to four weeks.

Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

Dr. Cooper will provide after-surgery instructions on how to properly care for your eyes during your healing. He will also schedule follow up appointments to monitor your recovery.

As bruising and swelling subside, patients should see a more defined, smoother area around each eye. They should look younger and more alert, as well. We recommend stocking up on medical-grade sunscreen to protect your results from harmful UV rays.

Palm Beach Eyelid Surgery FAQs

Eyelid surgery is a highly tolerable procedure when performed by a qualified, board certified plastic surgeon. It’s rare for patients to take pain medications after the first days of recovery.  Significant discomfort is unusual, which is why many patients choose to combine this procedure with others to double down on the recovery period.

The thinner the skin, the better the scar – this is a general rule in surgery. Eyelid skin is the most delicate on the entire body, and it makes for the least visible scars.  Concerning the lower eyelid, there is the option to remove prominent fat from the eyelid through the eyelash line, which does not leave a visible scar.

To learn more about eyelid surgery, request a consultation with Dr. Jason Cooper at one of his convenient locations in Jupiter or Palm Beach.

Eyelid surgery address excess upper eyelid skin, prominent or bulging fat in the upper and lower eyelid, lower eyelid fat bags, transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek, position of the lateral eyelid commissure relative to the inner eyelid commissure, and eyelid aperture opening.

The incisions are different depending upon whether the upper or lower eyelid is being addressed. For upper lid surgery, the incision will be within the upper eyelid crease. This incision is very well concealed and typically not visible when the eyes are open. The lower eyelid incision is placed immediately below the lash line.

A relaxed environment. We perform multiple eyelid surgeries per week. Often, eyelid surgery is combined with facial rejuvenation surgery, although it can be performed alone. Eyelid surgery is conducted under sedation, so there is no awareness whatsoever during the procedure. Surgical time ranges from an hour to an hour and a half if all four lids are part of the surgical plan. There is minimal discomfort after eyelid surgery. Patients recover in our facility for 45-60 minutes after the procedure and are discharged home.

Upper eyelid surgical recovery includes minor swelling 2-3 days post-operation. Sutures are removed at 6 days following surgery, and patients can return to most activities at 2 weeks after surgery. Lower eyelid surgery may require slightly more downtime, as minor bruising and swelling should be anticipated for 10-14 days. Sutures are removed from the lower eyelids at 6 days post-operation.

You will need to consult with Dr. Cooper so he can advise you on whether your historical scar history will have an impact on eyelid surgical healing. Adverse surgical healing can be related to numerous factors that may or may not have any bearing on eyelid healing and scarring.

Of course, the purpose of good surgical planning and execution is to perform an operation that restores your natural appearance and beauty. I prefer that someone ask if you lost weight after eyelid surgery because no one should be aware you had surgery on your eyes. You should look better.

Typically, it’s not a good idea to operate on one eyelid unless a revision of prior surgery is being performed.

Nothing is permanent, but performing lower eyelid surgery multiple times should be closely evaluated due to adverse outcomes such as “fish eye” or dry eye that care arise from having multiple lower eyelid surgeries. Sometimes after many years, patients may require a small amount of sagging skin (not fat) to be removed from the lateral part of the upper eyelid. The removal of this skin will usually help decrease hooding.

The procedure is performed with IV sedation and then the area around the eyes is numbed with local anesthesia. You are not awake, and there is no awareness during the surgery.

The area will be swollen for a few days, but you will experience minimal to no pain. You should be able to easily read, respond to text messages, and do computer work after 48 hours.

1 to 2.5 hours depending if surgery is just to upper or lower eyelids or both upper and lower eyelids

No. I use IV sedation, so you will need a friend or family member to drive you back home.

9-15% of patients experience increased dry eye after lower eyelid surgery, therefore evaluating a patient’s pre-existing dry eye is a critical part of the consultation process. I rarely ever have patients experience dry eye after upper lid surgery. I have a very clear process and surgical technique to reduce the chance of developing dry eye after eyelid surgery.

To improve your appearance by removing skin and fat from either the upper or lower lids or both.

No, crow’s feet are the result of smiling, which involves upper lip elevation and squinting. Your crow’s feet may be softened, but they will not be removed and should not be expected to be removed with this surgery. Droopy eyebrows can be the result of many different things. The eyebrow will not move up without a brow lift, which is a different operation than blepharoplasty surgery. Lastly, dark circles are likely to remain after eyelid surgery. Dark circles can be the result of genetic skin pigmentation, shadowing, thin skin with vein visibility, or facial soft tissue descent. Therefore, dark circles may be improved, but they are much more likely to remain to some degree.

The bags can be removed by carefully removing fat in these areas.

The brow position and upper eyelid position will be assessed at the time of your consult.

Typically, the soft tissue around the eye tends to droop, leading to the appearance of fat bags in the lower eyelid area. The upper eyelid skin can also to droop, leading to lateral hooding.

Candidates for this procedure are patients who dislike excess upper or lower eyelid excess skin, along with those experiencing bulging fat in either the upper or lower lid.

Yes, I just need to review your dry eye history.

I have operated on lower eyelids in patients as young as 21 and as old as 85.

Yes, although they are very minimal and well concealed by design.

Dry eye can be a side effect of lower eyelid surgery, along with scarring and bleeding.

Typically you can resume wearing contact lenses 10 to 14 days after your surgery.

This is at the discretion of the doctor. I prefer to wait a few months to allow for scar remodeling and skin settling before considering. Having a good doctor-patient relationship is important. Most minor procedures can be performed under local anesthesia.
