The Different Types of Rhinoplasty Explained

Each human nose is of a complex design, comprised of many parts, including cartilage, bone, tissue, nerves, and more. Rhinoplasty is a complicated surgery and must be done with great skill and care.

Every nose surgery must be carefully planned to achieve optimal results for each patient. When you consult with Dr. Cooper, your nose improvement will be customized to your unique facial anatomy and cosmetic goals. Initially, he will discuss the different types of rhinoplasty and which one can help you achieve your desired outcome.

Open or Closed?

Any nose surgery is one of two techniques: closed rhinoplasty or open rhinoplasty. During an open rhinoplasty, a single incision is placed beneath the nose between the nostrils (columella). During a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils. The closed technique leaves no visible scarring. The open approach may leave a faint, unnoticeable scar on the underside of the nose.

These two approaches offer Dr. Cooper access to the nose in different ways, allowing him to adapt the surgery for each patient. He will choose the technique based mainly on what changes are necessary to achieve the best outcome.  He will discuss these options with you during your rhinoplasty consultation.

Reduction or Augmentation?

Augmentation and reduction are terms used to indicate whether nasal surgery will make the nose smaller or more prominent. Nose size ranks among the top grievances heard by plastic surgeons from their patients. Those who are unsatisfied with their noses being too small or too big should seek to balance their nose with other facial features from one of these techniques.

Options to Correct Nasal Tip

Many of our patients share a similar cosmetic concern. Either their noses tilt down, are too pointy, or there are other problems with the shape of their nasal tip. When looking to change the shape, size, or direction of the nasal tip, you should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in rhinoplasty.

Refining the tip of the nose is a delicate art that involves planning, discussion, experience, and skill. Dr. Cooper will likely use the open rhinoplasty technique to gain the most direct access to your nasal tip. This technique allows him to pull back the skin from the nose and concentrate on the area. Again, Dr. Cooper will have a couple of choices about making the changes you want, like adding or removing cartilage from the tip. Once the correct amount is in place, he can manipulate it into a more aesthetic shape.

Choose Only the Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon

When considering rhinoplasty, be careful about the surgeon you choose. The nose is a vital organ with delicate anatomy that requires the utmost care. Never compromise quality for cost. Seek the best plastic surgeon available who specializes in facial plastic surgery.
