What Are Dermal Fillers?
A dermal filler is a medical-grade injectable product designed to add volume to underlying facial tissue where subcutaneous fat has diminished with age. When this cushion layer decreases, facial muscles work closer to the skin’s surface, making fine lines, wrinkles, and folds more visible. Fillers like Juvederm XC, Voluma, Volbella, Vollure, and Restylane can help correct these cosmetic concerns with targeted injections that restore a smooth, even skin surface.
VyCross and HylaCross Technologies
HylaCross is a chemical process used to join smaller particles within the filler. With this type of filler, injectors can control how tightly the particles are joined to make the consistency stiffer or softer.
Vycross is the latest in Juvederm’s advanced technologies. It is similar to HylaCross in that it joins particles of hyaluronic acid, but in this case, the particles are of different sizes. The varying sizes allow the HA to become more tightly packed, giving the injector precise control over the final shape and texture.
Types of Dermal Fillers
Juvederm XC
This hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is a gel designed to smooth away wrinkles around your mouth and nose. It is a product of HylaCross technology and is infused with lidocaine for added comfort. Results are immediate and include the reduction of smile lines, restoration of natural contours, and smoothing of wrinkles.
It utilizes naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, which decreases in your body due to sun exposure and other factors. The loss of HA leads to reduced volume and structure, creating unwanted effects such as parenthesis lines around the mouth and nose. Juvederm XC replaces lost HA to restore youthful fullness and a smooth, even skin texture.
Voluma
Juvéderm Voluma is an injectable filler composed of a modified form of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid (HA). This volumizer is primarily used to lift and recontour facial areas such as the chin and cheeks. Voluma is one of several FDA-approved dermal fillers in the Juvéderm family and is considered one of the most reliable non-surgical anti-aging product lines for restoring facial volume.
Voluma is FDA-approved for use in the chin and cheeks to support skin structure by enhancing volume. Its results are immediate, correcting age-related volume loss, especially in the cheek area. It offers long-lasting correction for up to two years.
Vollure
Juvéderm Vollure, like Voluma and Volbella, features the same Vycross technology. However, Vollure is FDA-approved for treating nasolabial folds, which are among the most common cosmetic concerns addressed with dermal fillers.
An exciting feature of Vollure is that it lasts up to 18 months, making it one of the longest-lasting options for the non-surgical treatment of nasolabial folds. Dr. Cooper and his staff are proud to offer women and men in Palm Beach, Jupiter, and South Florida a facial filler that provides such long-lasting results.
Volbella
Another hyaluronic acid filler, Volbella, uses Vycross technology for smooth, natural-looking, and long-lasting results. It is commonly used for lip augmentation and the treatment of perioral lines (lines around the mouth). It can also be used for under-eye hollows in some cases.
Many patients seek lip enhancements to achieve more defined lip contours, such as a “Cupid’s bow,” improving overall facial balance. Volbella contains the numbing agent lidocaine for a more comfortable treatment experience. Results last up to one year.
Restylane
The Restylane family of fillers is an excellent option for patients looking to reduce lines and wrinkles in the face. Restylane offers several different products, including Defyne, Refyne, Silk, and Lyft, which can be used to treat different areas of the face depending on the area and severity of concern. These filler options are commonly used to treat mild to severe smile lines, facial wrinkles, lip lines, and other signs of aging. Patients often choose Restylane to add volume to the lips. Restylane products are safe and FDA-approved.

Choosing the Right Filler
Over the past decade, non-surgical approaches to facial rejuvenation have been trending because of convenience and effectiveness. Although results are temporary, dermal fillers are an excellent stopgap for anti-aging treatments, especially for younger women whose age-related facial blemishes are less severe. With its increasing popularity, there has been a rush of individuals seeking to become injectors from a weekend class or seminar. However, you won’t want to entrust your face to anyone but the most skilled and trained of injectors.

Dermal Filler FAQs
How soon will I see my results?
Although there may be some swelling, you should see immediate improvement, with results complete after the swelling subsides within a week.
Can I get more than one treatment on the same day?
It is not rare for us to treat multiple cosmetic concerns in one treatment session. Addressing different areas such as the lips, cheeks, and chin to restore facial structure is common. Generally, your injector will work from the cheeks down to the chin, a technique often referred to as “scaffolding.”
How old should I be for dermal filler treatments?
Our dermal filler injections are suitable for anyone over 21 years of age.
What are the side effects?
Common side-effects from dermal filler injections include:
- Swelling and tenderness
- Redness
- Bumps and bruising at the injection sites
- Itching
- Dryness (particularly with Volbella)
The best practice to reduce risk and enjoy outstanding results is to seek out a certified medical professional to administer your treatments.
