Breast Reduction in West Palm Beach, FL

The problem of heavy breasts that are too large for your frame can cause physical and emotional discomfort. In addition, aesthetic and medical issues can significantly affect your quality of life. Harvard-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Cooper offers breast reduction surgery for women who seek to look and feel their best, fit into fashionable clothing, and reduce or resolve shoulder, back, and neck pain.

Improving Confidence and Quality of Life by Reducing Breasts

Though many of our patients from South Florida, including Wellington, Boca Raton, and surrounding areas, request breast augmentation or a lift, many women we see struggle with the daily challenges posed by oversized breasts.

Dr. Cooper considers breast reduction to be one of the most gratifying procedures he performs. His patients typically experience significant improvements in their confidence and quality of life after surgery. Unfortunately, many have suffered years of pain and postural problems caused by their breasts’ weight or have had to limit their activities and wardrobes.

Learn why women considering breast reduction come to Dr. Cooper’s Jupiter practice from throughout the Palm Beach area, including Palm Beach Gardens. Request a consultation online to meet with Dr. Cooper, or call our office at (561) 406-6574 to schedule an appointment.

What Is Breast Reduction?

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with Dr. Cooper’s experience and skill, breast reduction results in improved size, shape, position, and symmetry of the breasts. He accomplishes this correction by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin, while making every attempt to create minimal scarring and preserve nipple sensation.

Top Reasons for Considering Breast Reduction Surgery

Women seeking breast reductions typically experience one or more of the following conditions:

  • Breasts that are disproportionate to the rest of their body
  • Back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by heavy, pendulous breasts
  • Painful bra strap grooves and chafing
  • Inability to participate in sports or other physical activities
  • Self-consciousness because of unwanted attention

Your Customized Breast Reduction Procedure

During your consultation, Dr. Cooper will evaluate your physical characteristics and customize a surgical plan to create your desired results. The incisions used for your procedure depend on the surgical techniques Dr. Cooper believes are necessary to improve your breast shape and alleviate any discomfort you may be experiencing.

Dr. Cooper uses two incision patterns to perform breast reduction.

This pattern is the most common used for this procedure and is often the best choice for women with overly generous breasts. Dr. Cooper makes incisions around the areolar borders, followed by vertical incisions on the underside of each breast. He creates a third horizontal incision near the crease where the breasts attach to the chest.

The “lollipop” incision is similar to the inverted T, but without the horizontal incisions. It is appropriate for patients whose breasts require only a moderate reduction.

During your consultation, Dr. Cooper will recommend one of these two patterns and explain why he feels is the best choice for your case.

What to Expect During Breast Reduction Recovery

Women who get breast reductions, are typically among the most satisfied of all cosmetic surgery patients. They enjoy more options regarding clothing and physical activities, and they usually feel more confident in their appearance.

Most women take a week off from work to heal, asking friends or family for help with errands or other daily activities during that time. Dr. Cooper will provide you with detailed instructions about what to expect during the recovery and will prescribe pain relief medication to help with any discomfort you may experience.

Recovery times are different for each patient, but here are some general guidelines.

Immediately After

Return home and rest, following Dr. Cooper’s detailed instructions for caring for and monitoring your drains (if you have them). Walking helps with circulation and accelerates the healing process. Nausea is typical following an operation that involves general anesthesia, so work your way up to eating solid food.

First Week After

You’ll need to return to our office within the first 24 to 48 hours after your surgery so Dr. Cooper can remove your bandages and any drains. After that, you’ll only need to take prescription pain medication for a few more days. Some light activity is OK in the first week after surgery, but please do not lift anything heavy.

A Few Weeks After

Avoid vigorous exercise in the first four weeks after your breast reduction. Bruising and tenderness gradually diminish during this period. Some numbness or tingling may also occur and typically fade over time. Scars will gradually become less prominent, but may take up to a year or more to fade into your skin.

West Palm Breast Reduction FAQs

All surgeries have risks. However, breast reduction is typically safe when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon.

Common breast reduction complications include visible scarring, infection, and loss of nipple sensation. The scar will be red at first but will fade dramatically over the next year.

Dr. Cooper will administer anesthesia during breast reduction, but you should expect soreness for two to three days post-surgery. We will give you prescription pain medication and may advise placing ice packs over sore areas to help with inflammation and discomfort. Contact Dr. Cooper immediately if the discomfort lasts longer than a few days or becomes unbearable.

Dr. Cooper does not accept any insurance in his practice.

Tell Dr. Cooper if you plan to lose a significant amount of weight. Weight loss before or after breast reduction surgery can affect your results.

Sometimes liposuction is combined with breast reduction for the best results. It is not typical to do lipo to breasts instead of breast reduction.

Dr. Cooper will provide you with a surgical bra for two weeks after surgery. At your follow-up visit, we will let you know if you should continue wearing this bra or if you can wear a similar support garment. We will also inform you when it is appropriate to wear a traditional bra. Please avoid underwire bras for at least three months after having breast reduction surgery.

Breasts often change in size and shape during and after pregnancy, so it’s helpful to talk to your surgeon about the possibility of becoming pregnant after breast reduction surgery.

If you plan to get pregnant and breastfeed in the future, breast reduction surgery may limit your nursing ability if Dr. Cooper must remove a large amount of breast tissue or if the surgery affects your milk ducts. These are good questions to discuss during your breast reduction consultation.

Breast cancer risk varies from woman to woman, and studies have not shown breast reduction to increase or decrease this medical issue. If you have questions about breast cancer risk, speak to your gynecologist or Dr. Cooper during your consultation.
